愛媛県西予市で半世紀以上もの間、しめ縄職人として活動する上甲 清（じょうこう・きよし）。しめ縄専用の稲を自ら栽培して、田植えから稲刈りまで丹精を込めて行います。こだわり抜いて出来上がった藁と手を擦り合わせながら、一つひとつ力を込めて綯（な）っていきます。
健康や平和、五穀豊穣の祈りを込め、上甲 清によって生み出されたしめ縄作品は、一年の締めくくりに春待つ喜びを象徴するプロダクトとして、全国各地の民藝店やセレクトショップを通じて、人々の手に渡っています。そんな彼の営み、伝統的な手仕事や文化とそこから生まれる藁細工をより多くの人に知ってもらいたいという思いのもと、彼の孫である上甲智香（じょうこう・ちか）が2021 年に立ち上げた「孫プロジェクト」があります。
~About the Exhibition~
Kiyoshi Joko has been working as a shimenawa craftsman in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture for over half a century. He grows the special type of rice plant used for shimenawa himself, taking care of every step from planting to harvesting. He then rubs his hands together with great force, weaving together each piece of the straw he has taken such care to grow.
His shimenawa works, imbued with prayers for health, peace, and bountiful harvests, are available to people through folk art stores and select shops across the country as products that symbolize the joy of waiting for spring at the end of the year. In order to let more people know about his work, as well as the traditional handicrafts and culture of straw craft born from them, his granddaughter, Chika Joko, launched the “Mago (grandchild) Project” in 2021.
本展は、この「孫プロジェクト」に共感した Mountain Morning（ マウンテンモーニング・インテリアスタイリスト作原文子、デイレクター今井 孝則）、孫・上甲智香の想いを受け企画、上甲 清の製作に伴走するかたちで、フォトグラファーとともに愛媛に渡り、田植えや製作の様子を写真・映像に収めました。本展は、この映像や写真の展示、また作原文子によるスタイリングを織り交ぜた空間演出を通し、広く藁文化に触れ、体験していただける場を作り、多角的にプロジェクトを紹介していきます。
自然と共に生き、時を紡ぐその姿に、分野の垣根を超えた多くの作り手が呼応し、彼の活動に賛同してきました。朗らかで真摯な物づくりを通じて、人と人との縁を結び、思いを繋ぐ上甲 清と孫プロジェクトの歩みをご覧ください。
This exhibition was put together by the Mountain Morning team of interior stylist Fumiko Sakuhara and director Takanori Imai, who felt great empathy with the “Mago Project”, and was inspired by the thoughts of granddaughter Chika. The team travelled to Ehime together with a photographer to capture Kiyoshi Joko’s work, from rice planting to production, in photos and videos. At the exhibition venue, these video and photos will be exhibited. Additionally, through spatial design incorporating styling by Fumiko Sakuhara, a space will be created where people can come into contact with and experience straw culture and be introduced to the project from multiple angles.
Kiyoshi’s way of living in harmony with nature, as if weaving time itself, has resonated with many creators over a wide variety of fields, and many of them have come to support his activities in one way or another. See the journey of Kiyoshi Joko and the Mago Project, connecting people and sharing thoughts through cheerful and sincere craftsmanship.
上甲 清（ じょうこう・きよし、農家・しめ縄職人）
1936 年生まれ。愛媛県西予市宇和町に工房を構える藁職人。
2002 年、消えゆく藁文化を将来に残すため「宇和わらぐろの会」を発足し、全国各地で大会やイベントに参加。2021 年 21 世紀えひめの伝統工芸大賞 愛媛朝日テレビ社長賞 受賞。藁文化が未来へと受け継がれることを願い現在も活動中。
Kiyoshi Joko (Farmer/Shimenawa Artisan)
Born in 1936. A straw artisan with a studio in Uwa-cho, Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture. In 2002, he established the Uwa Waraguro Association to preserve the disappearing straw culture for the future, and has participated in competitions and events across the country. In 2021, he won the Ehime Asahi Television President’s Award at the 21st Century Ehime Traditional Crafts Grand Prize. He is currently active in the hope of passing on straw culture to the future.
上甲智香（じょうこう・ちか、孫プロジェクト代表）
工芸品を扱うショップ販売員を経験し、職人としての祖父・清の作品に催事企画を通じて触れたことをきっかけに、作品を流通・発信させる活動体として「孫プロジェクト」を立ち上げる。現在は、祖父と共に農家として、材料作りから制作のサポートにも携わる。
Chika Joko (Representative of the Mago Project)
While working as a salesperson at a crafts shop and planning events, she came to appreciate and love the works of her grandfather, craftsman Kiyoshi, and launched the Mago Project as an organization to distribute and promote his works. Currently, she works as a farmer with her grandfather, and is involved in everything from preparing materials to supporting production.

沖縄県生まれ。2015 年からフォトグラファーとして雑誌、広告、web メディアなどで活動中。2023 年3 月、ロンドンの街を撮り下ろした写真集『SEPTEMBER IN LONDON』（Union Publishing Limited）を刊行。
